On Saturday the 11th of June 2011 Covent Gardens will play host to the launch of this year’s Modball rally; heralded as ‘The worlds craziest rally’ Modball is the ultimate trip for anyone with a modified car and a head for driving all day and partying all night for six days straight!
2011 promises to be the biggest event yet, hosted by the UK’s most famous glamour girl Lucy Pinder. Previous years have seen entries from the likes of: Matthew Pritchard from MTV’s Dirty Sanchez, Georg Fechter from Masters of Dirt, Fuel Girls Susie Ward, Vanessa Wise & Sam Britton as well as Calum Best who experienced car failure on day 1 last year.
The 2011 route see’s over 200 car fans begin their six day journey of a life time at the Covent garden’s starting line in London, from there they make their way over to the continent going on through Paris, Cannes, Rome, Venice and Geneva partying at every stop which culminates in the awards party at Geneva. The journey home encapsulates stunning views and picture perfect postcard towns as the drivers make their way from Switzerland to the South of France and home again, for a well-earned sleep!
Unlike other car rallies, the modball is inexpensive and made up of real people with real cars and a passion for driving and partying. It’s not a race it’s all about participation and the ‘spirit of the Modball.’
In 2007 on the second day of the rally the Modball made German Television and the front page of every German newspaper for being surrounded by 100 German Police cars during a car display at the Cologne Arena. Three cars had been caught speeding over 150mph, leaving the chief of police to deem the event, which had received permission to travel through the country as an illegal street race. This resulted in a Police escort to Belgium which took 10 hours. This was however not enough to stop the Modballers who drove their cars through the night to make the next party in Prague. The award for ‘spirit of the Modball’ award went to every team that year.
100 vehicles participate in the event which understandably sells out pretty fast, so although you’ve missed out this year perhaps you could think about entering the 2012 rally, all you need is a minimum of two people a car with at least two modifications and plenty of energy. The Modball rally encourage entrants to be as crazy as possible with their vehicles having seen a hearse, fire engine, monster trucks, Maserati’s and even fiestas at previous rallies.
Until then why don’t you make your way over to the Covent Garden starting line on Saturday 11th June and soak up some of the energy and fun, as well as seeing what this year’s entrants have to offer.
